MSCI Upgrades Israel Index to Developed Markets; "BIRD Energy" and more biz updates |
|
MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International/Barra) will reclassify the MSCI Israel Index to Developed Markets: MSCI announced its final conclusions as well as the list of countries under review as part of the Annual Market Classification Review, as follows: 1) Israel: MSCI will reclassify the MSCI Israel Index to Developed Markets coinciding with the May 2010 Semi-Annual Index Review. The relatively short settlement cycle for equities on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange was the only concern that was raised by international institutional investors during the consultation. MSCI recognizes that this concern is an important one but considers that it should not be an impediment to the reclassification of the Israeli market to Developed Markets status. MSCI continues to encourage the Israeli regulator and the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange to address the issues raised by investors who would prefer a better alignment with international practices. The MSCI Israel Index will be included in the MSCI World Index and in the MSCI EAFE Index. Only securities of companies domiciled in Israel that have a listing on the Tel-Aviv Stock exchange will be eligible at that point.
"BIRD Energy" Request for U.S.-Israel Joint Renewable Energy Proposals: The U.S. Department of Energy, the Israeli Minsitry of National Infrastructures and the BIRD Foundation have established a new program for joint renewable energy developments. Click here for details.
Israel's Balance of Payments Surprises With A Surplus: USD 2.7 Billion (up from USD 0.8 billion in Q4 2008). Click for chart.
Israel to Introduce Green Tax Program: The Israeli government has announced a new program to introduce a new taxation policy on vehicles, in a bid to encourage the purchase of cars with lower emissions. The system will rank cars according to their pollution rates. The base tax rate for non-hybrid, nonelectric cars will increase from 72 percent today to 92 percent. A series of tax rebates will reduce that base depending on the car's pollution rating. Hybrid cars will be taxed at 30 percent, and electric cars will be taxed at 10 percent. The pollution rating will be calculated based on the car's emissions of five basic types including nitric oxides and carbon dioxide. Other factors that affect the rating will include the size of the engine, the type of gear system (automatic transmissions are less efficient than manual ones) and devices installed to reduce emissions.

Trader Joe Stands up to Boycott and more news from Buy Israel Goods - a program of the America-Israel Chamber of Commerce Chicago Originated and Sponsored by Howard I. Bernstein |

Trader Joe Stands up to Boycott: On June 21, Harriet & Howard (Buy Israel Goods' originator and sponsor) Bernstein went to Trader Joe's (Waukegan, North of Lake) to buy all the stuff they usually get there. They found the manager, and told him they came because of the boycott against Trader Joe (for selling Israeli products). He was aware of the boycott, and immediately volunteered to take Harriet and Howard around the store to show them all of the Israeli products, which they also purchased. One Israeli product is Trader Joe brand of "Israeli cous coos". The other is, Howard reports, a "most wonderful", Dorot brand Crushed Garlic, the garlic being in twenty separate cubes, which will now be permanently in Howard's house. You too can fight boycotts! Shop Israeli and let the store managers know!
Buy Israel Goods on LinkedIn: About 50 Linkedin connections have been established with persons believed to be interested in and/or well-positioned to assist in certain elements of improvement and expansion of BIG. The hope is that some of these connections will be able to influence Israeli companies to be more cooperative, and introduce people in additional USA market areas that will assist with identifying listings for BIG. The Linkedin connections, and others, in various USA market areas will be solicited to follow the Chicago area model of sending letters to organizations that announce dinners, in order to encourage them to serve ONLY Israeli wines. An available WORD document, easily customized, is available and makes the process easy to carry out, without much expenditure of time and/or work.
To ask to be a contact, go to www.linkedin.com and use search section at top of page - indicate People Search and Howard I. Bernstein - Follow screen instructions. If anyone is not signed up with linkedin, they need to follow the instructions to sign up Las Vegas and beyond? After introduction by Jay Tcath (Jewish Federation of Chicago), Howard Bernstein met with Elliot Karp, the head of Federation in Las Vegas, to seek assistance developing local listings so BIG could add Las Vegas to BIG. As time and effort become available, it should be possible to expand coverage of BIG to include San Diego, Phoenix, Palm Springs Area, Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Denver, Detroit, Western Florida.
Interns Wanted: Marketing students or anyone else interested in Buy Israel Goods are encouraged to send their resumes to Howard I. Bernstein. It would be great to have the availability of a dedicated intern to work on the above matters any time of year.
