NEWS FROM THE

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CHICAGO

From the President
Vision for the Future
Daniel B. Shure, BeShure LLC, AICC President

Upon my election as AICC's President at the December Annual Meeting, I commented that despite the economic downturn, AICC's membership had grown, and that I saw the challenges ahead as opportunities to be leveraged.

The continuing poor economy means more of us are looking for ways to make new business contacts.  Membership in the AICC will help you do that. You connect personally with like-minded individuals through networking opportunities available to members.  And, our constant introduction of business and trade groups gives you the chance to find opportunities for you and your company.

But that is not the main function of the Chamber. The personal gain you hope to find is the icing on the cake. The Chamber lives to promote and create opportunities for bilateral trade between the U.S. and Israel. Our success is Israel's economic strength and security and that of the companies building their businesses together, hopefully doing that through Chicago and the Midwest.

As President of the AICC, I am planning on:

  • Increasing the rate of growth of our membership.
  • Growing the base of organizations we partner with business and networking activities.
  • Maintaining the high quality and frequency of our programming.
  • Continuing to expose our members to important Israeli businesses and their leaders.
  • Raising our Chamber's profile in the community.
Our work is only possible because of our members and program supporters. If you are not already a dues-paying member, we ask to become one immediately. This can be easily done online at http://www.americaisrael.org/scripts/mem_Application.asp - or call AICC's Executive Director Michael Schmitt at 847-597-7069.

(1)  A Case Study - AICC Speaker Programs Drive Business

You've attended AICC programs, made new contacts, caught up with friends and colleagues, and learned something new about an aspect of business between the U.S. and Israel from a dynamic speaker.  But how do programs advance AICC's mission of facilitating between the U.S. and Israel?

On February 25, we presented Ben-Gurion University's noted diabetes researcher Dr. Eli Lewis*.  The program brought AICC members together with philanthropists, academics, and scientists from leading life science companies for breakfast, networking, and a fascinating presentation on Israeli advances in understanding and treating diabetes.

By leveraging our unique position in the community, bridging business, science, and philanthropic networks, we secured meetings between Dr. Lewis and senior researchers at area biotech companies.

Participants tell us:

I found the Chamber's role very useful to facilitate a dialogue between my company and a researcher with very interesting new technology which may result in a close collaboration with mutual benefits for both parties involved.
Thomas R. Strack MD, Takeda Global Research and Development Center, Inc.

With the outstanding help of the chamber we were
able to facilitate meetings for one of our professors with high level professionals at both Baxter and Takeda.  This opened up doors to possible collaborations that did not exist before.  The AICC connection really helps me do business
Judy Rosen, AICC Member and Director, AABGU Great Lakes Region

* This program was a presentation of AICC's Life Sciences Practice Group in cooperation with American Associates Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (AABGU), and the America-Israel Economic Forum (AIEF).

(2)  Networking for the Future

It was one year ago that AICC's immediate past President launched the AICC Employment and Business Opportunity Network in order to help facilitate networking for members and non-members in transition.

A great tool for networking is the AICC Chicago LinkedIn group - a group that today counts 230 contacts and growing.  Of those contacts, many are dues-paying AICC members, with the larger balance being people looking for meaningful connections with our members and the State of Israel.

I have been available to facilitate contacts for professionals in transition, and I am asking everyone to continue to make themselves available to people in transition and fellow AICC members who contact you to inquire about providing services to your company or employment opportunities, or just to ask if you know someone and can make an introduction.

And members, if your business has open positions, please send to us
information and weblinks that we can post on AICC's Employment and Business Opportunity Network and AICC's LinkedIn group.
